William Joseph Glanz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed peacefully at home on January 3, 2017. Bill was a charmer who loved to make others smile. He was a talented artist and was delighted by movies, mystery, and flying. He liked watching and playing golf. He enjoyed playing poker with his kids. He loved his family and adored his wife, Susan. Born November 16, 1932, in Los Angeles, Bill's life was full of showmanship and creativity. Bill built a successful sign and graphic design business starting in 1956. He started out as one of the first to paint seasonal designs on store windows in Los Angeles. He helped build Sky-High Advertising, which floated promotional hot air balloons (and sometimes provided low-altitude thrills to passers-by). Before moving to San Diego, he started Monarch Sign Company in Los Angeles and was president of the Lions Club in Maywood . Today, Glanz Signing & Graphics continues as a thriving business thanks to the commitment of his sons, Don and Dave. Susan helped him in building the business as the office manager for over 30 years. Glanz signs are visible throughout San Diego and beyond. Bill was proud to have served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves for six years. His favorite colors were red, white, and blue. After he retired, watercolors became his favorite media and he enjoyed taking classes and sharing his spectacular paintings and he continued to make signs for his friends and neighbors. Even Parkinson's disease was unable to subdue Bill's playful spirit. He became a celebrity at the San Diego Parkinson's Foundation annual walk along with his support team, Bill's Buddies. Bill, in his motorized scooter, donned his leather aviator's jacket, hat, and googles to zoom along the walkway with his white silk scarf fluttering in his wake. His transport van (thanks to Jim Foster) became an "Official Area 51 Recovery Vehicle" with VAN ALIEN vanity plates. Passengers were encouraged to wear oversize silver sunglasses with slanted alien eyes. Bill is survived by Susan, his wife of almost 35 years, and his children Debbie Hernandez, Dave (Debbie) Glanz, Don (Stephanie) Glanz, Jim Glanz, Chryss Yost (George Yatchisin), and Cari (Matt) Winter, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Mary Stewart, his sister-in-law, Cynthia Pyle, and his many friends and fellow geezers. The family wishes to thank everyone who has helped with Bill's care, especially Veronica Navarro, his caregiver for three years who could make him smile when no one else could. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Puppies Behind Bars, a program which provides service dogs to wounded veterans.
