Timothy Paul Caffarella was born to LeRoy Edward Caffarella and Thelma Vida White Caffarella on October 20, 1949 in Malden, Massachusetts. Tim was the second child and one of two boys born to Roy and Thelma, in a family that would eventually include five more siblings, all girls. The Caffarella family moved from the Boston area suburbs to Tucson, Arizona in 1961 where Tim started his junior high years. He graduated from Palo Verde High School in 1967 and went on to attend Central Arizona College and then ended up joining the Navy, and served on the USS Nerius. The Navy brought him to San Diego where he would spend the rest of his life, an avid fan of beaches and bodies of water, especially the ocean. He became a certified scuba diver and even worked as an abalone diver in the 1970s. Tim was very proud of his military service and remained very patriotic throughout his life. Naval service also gave him a great passion for water craft, which he went on to acquire and freely share with others. Most unusual was his expertise in piloting submersibles, specifically two-man submarines. He was a long-standing member the Deep Submersible Pilots Association (DSPA) and collected undersea mementos from pilots all over the world. He even participated in races for man-powered submarines and owned one of the unique crafts. Piloting submarines provided a living for many years as he would take scientists to the floor of the ocean for exploratory endeavors. Tim, along with all of his siblings and parents, had a deep-rooted love for God, family, music, animals and America. He joined Point Loma (First) Nazarene Church in 1980 and sang in the choir for decades, as well as ensembles and other special music. He played the guitar, dulcimer and piano. He loved singing and especially enjoyed singing to–and for– his Savior, Jesus Christ. Above all, Tim loved and served God. He wanted everyone to know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life. He strove to teach his children and grand-children the importance of surrendering their lives to Jesus at a young age and then being His disciple for the remainder of their earthly existence. Tim is survived by his wife, Amy (Tucek Ruark) Caffarella, his four daughters, Laurie (Mike) Greer of Mississippi, Roxane (Frederick) Miller of Arizona, Amity (Corey) McFarlin of Texas, and Sommer Caffarella of San Diego, and his step-sons Brian (Rina) Ruark of Honduras and Adrian Ruark of San Diego. He is also survived by his siblings, Tom (Maxine) Caffarella of New York, Linda (David) Canterbury of Arizona, Cheryl (Paul) Wilson of Arizona, Joy (Paul) Fields of Arizona, Dale (Jan) Simmons of Texas, and Dawn Caffarella of New Mexico. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren and numerous nieces/nephews and grands, all of whom he loved and would take the time to engage his "Donald Duck voice." A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 10am in Ellipse Chapel at San Diego First Church of the Nazarene on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University, 3901 Lomaland Drive, San Diego, 92106.
