Rosa Margarita Diaz Cauchi was born on December 20, 1952, in Huacho, Peru. Her legal name in Peru reflects the surnames of both of her parents, her father being Simon Diaz, and her mother Pelaya Cauchi. In Peru Rosa favored her second name, Margarita, but after she immigrated to the United States she began introducing herself as Rosa. She died of cancer in San Diego County on December 3, 2016, two and a half weeks short of her 64th birthday. Rosa graduated from Colegio Nacional Mercedes Indacochea and Universidad Nacional José Faustino Sánchez Carrión, attaining the title of public accountant. She worked as accountant for agriculture-based organizations near Huacho from 1973 to 1992. In the United States she applied herself vigorously to the tasks of learning English and retooling her accounting skills via coursework at Mount Miguel Adult Center as well as Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges. To support herself through this process, she worked as an in-home care provider for the elderly and later as a bilingual classroom assistant for the Lemon Grove School District. In 2000, Rosa was naturalized as a United States citizen. That same year she was hired by the County of San Diego to work with the Department of Human Services Risk Management Division. She subsequently worked with Workman's Compensation, and her most recent assignment was as Staff Accountant Confidential with the Finance Unit. Rosa's devotion was to her family and her profession. She was intensely involved in nurturing two of her nephews and was viewed as a resource and inspiration by those who knew her. In 2004, Rosa permitted herself one of the few personal indulgences of her life, and she went on a tour of Italy. She is remembered as a person with high principles who was generous, kind, and hard-working. In her last conversations she comforted others, assuring them that she was happy, and eager to see her father again. She was preceded in death by her father and a niece, Sasha Yong. She is survived by her mother and her siblings, Lupe Hill, Silvia Diaz and Daniel Diaz, and by four nephews and a niece: Paul Rodriguez, Sasha Johnson, Simon Hill, Seth Hill, and Alex Diaz.
