Richard E Steinhauer, 81, a 35 year business owner and resident of San Diego passed away on Monday Oct 16, 2017 surrounded by friends & family.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on Oct 8, 1936 to Homer and Eleanor Steinhauer. He graduated from Washington High school and started his first business by the age of 25. He would be his own boss and successful business owner for the next 56 years. He loved the Indy 500 and watched his first race at the age of 15 by climbing a tree off of 16th street. Later his company would supply and install the black and white checkered carpet in Victory Lane, Indy 500 Balls, and 500 parades for over 20 years.
In the day and age where words like caring, loving, giving, strength, character and friend are thrown around like nothing; he was the finest of what these words stood for. He was happy to share his dry wit & words of wisdom to all. As a husband, father, grandfather, and friend he was a constant, a rock, a giver who would drop everything for you. He loved art and too few knew of his talents with paint and pencil. Count yourself lucky if you have a Richard "Original" hanging on your wall. He loved wine, fine food, fine friends and a fun round of golf. His pets were everything to him and he started taking them to work with him when he started his business.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Susan. He is also survived by son Rick (Terri) Steinhauer, daughter Penny (Kevin) Steinhauer-Burke, stepsons Todd (Cheryl), Neal (Carrie), Jeff (Melissa), and Rodney (Jessica) Gatien. He had 13 grandchildren and 1 Godchild. As he would always tell you "Life is No Dress Rehearsal, Cherish the Moment".
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society or Helen Woodward Center.
Celebration of life will be held on Tuesday November 14 at 5:00 PM at Marina Village 1936 Quiver Way San Diego, CA, in the Catalina Room.
