Richard Monroe Honeycutt passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Thursday January 25, 2018. He was surrounded by his loving family. A native of Apex, North Carolina, Richard was the son of Greene Honeycutt and Mamie Sheehan. As a child he worked the family tobacco farm and tended the animals before school. He survived a troubled childhood with the love and care of Wesley and Mattie Hunter, and they always held a special place in his heart. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1947-1967. He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, receiving numerous medals for his bravery, including the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star 2nd Award National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medals. He retired as Chief Petty Officer EMC. He then spent 20 years working for the State of California Caltrans before retiring. Richard was a collector of everything that might one day be useful. He loved to tinker with electronics. Being an Electronics Mate as well as a child of the Depression Era definitely fueled his interest in "fixing what's broke" in lieu of just buying a new one. This quality might have exasperated his family sometimes, but it is also the reason he and Betty were married 70 years. Stay the course. Work hard. Persevere. Triumph over insurmountable odds. A lesson for us all Richard is survived by his wife Betty, sons Richard Jr. and John, daughters Peggy Tollefson, Judy Buganan, Tammy Clark and Teresa Carel, as well as 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is loved and missed by all who knew him. When someone you love becomes a memory… That memory becomes a treasure Richard Honeycutt will be buried with full military honors at Miramar National Cemetery on Friday February 2nd at 11am
