He was kind, loyal, loving, and patient. He was a truly Gentle-Man. He was a child at heart. He liked Disney Parks, Carnivals and travel. He liked to be called "Sam". Even though he had to struggle with physical illness from a young age, his parents would not let him think of himself as being disabled. He contracted polio at a the young age of eighteen months old. He was brave in going through this illness. He endured many hospital stays at the Elizabethtown Crippled Children's Hospital in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. These two years only made him stronger in his body, mind and faith. The word "crippled" did not exist in his vocabulary, even before that word was politically incorrect. He finished high school and trade schools. Then he worked in the printing trade for many years. He could not remember not being a Christian. This is because his entire family attended church together. There were many church get-togethers. And many large family get-togethers. He came from a large "Pennsylvania Deutsch" family. This family included many aunts and uncles and all their children. Sam had a quiet faith. But if he could give another traveler on this pilgrim way, a good word about his faith and his God, he would be happy to. He once said to a friend of ours, "Life is like a parade, we only see the part of the parade that is right in front of us, but God sees the parade from the beginning to the end." Sam's favorite part of the Bible was The Lord's prayer and he would like for his wife and himself to say this together often. Another verse that he liked to recite was The Righteous live By FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT. As his wife, this verse encouraged me often to look beyond current circumstances. Sam was a rock for me for many years when my own faith was weak and many times when I thought that I would be overwhelmed by problems. Yes, Sam was an average man growing up in a society fraught with temptations that this country boy was not prepared for. Addictions plagued him for many years. But, when he asked me to marry him, I said that I could not marry him until he stopped being an alcoholic. He surprised me and he actually quit drinking. We married 33 years ago – Our marriage has definitely seen better and worse and we both have gone through sickness and health together. But, I am sure that we would both would marry each other again. Richard "Sam" resided in York County, Pennsylvania. Most of his life. He liked the game of Pool/ Billiards. Sam leaves behind many family members: his son, Tim, his daughter, Cheryl, his step-children, Anne and James. He loved all of his extended family: his nieces and nephews, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by: his wife, Anastasia, his brothers, Tom, Larry and Dave, and his sister,Carol. Those who have gone on to Heaven before him are: his mom, Rae Ann, his dad, H. Morrell, his sister DonnaLou, and her daughter, Barb. His memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army Church in El Cajon, Ca. The date is July 9, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. In Leau of flowers, please send your donations to the building fund of the Salvation Army Church in El Cajon, CA. Sam's family sends many, many thanks to the SDPA nursing center in El Cajon, Ca. They were very kind and caring to Sam in the final one and a half years of his life. Many thanks also to the Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Ca. The staff cared for Sam above and beyond their duties. Our entire family thanks all our friends who have been supportive to us and prayed for us through Sam's lengthy illness and who are supporting us now in the time after his passing on to his Heavenly home.
