Phillip "Jeff" Jefferson, 81, was born August 29, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the 14th of 17 children born to Benjamin and Gertrude (Finch) Jefferson.
In 1954 he graduated from Connelley Vocational High School and briefly attended University of Pittsburgh before joining the U.S. Marine Corp. Jeff served his country for over 22 years. He fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars and had fond memories of flying helicopters in those wars. In 1976, Master Sergeant Jeff Jefferson retired. His many achievements included Medals for Good Conduct and National Defense Service; Meritorious Mast; Combat Action Ribbon; Presidential Unit Citation; and several Vietnam honors, including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
As a civilian, Jeff settled in California and completed his Bachelors Degree at Chapman University. He also received a degree from Control Data Institute. In fact, he had a real love of learning and would frequently take courses to increase his knowledge. He even became a Certified Microsoft Technician. Though he was a shrewd investor and entrepreneur, he was employed as an engineer for the government until his retirement.
Jeff has been a San Diego resident for over 35 years and he often traveled. He loved a good car — particularly sleek sports cars like Porsches. Therefore, it is not surprising he loved to drive, especially when the drive culminated in his daily visits (yes, visits) to McDonalds for coffee; or, to visit with a beloved family member out of state. At 5' "6" he may have been small in stature, but he was an athletic giant — as anyone who has ever played against him in racketball could attest.
Jeff really loved his family so it was fitting he died surrounded by his loving family and friends on September 12, 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Yvette Adams (Herald), and three grandchildren: Khalae, Preston, and Nikhia. His brothers: Samuel Jefferson (Esther), Reuben Jefferson, and Edward Jefferson (Virginia). His sisters: Olive Blakey (Clarence), Gertrude Garland (Beenie), and Judy Jaworski. He is also survived by his honorary sons: Mahmoud Habhab (Nissrine) and honorary grandchildren: Dina, Nadine, and Nader; as well as Youssef Habhab, and honorary granddaughter, Yasmine.
