Linda Mae Mapuanawailokelani Birk died peacefully in her sleep at home in San Diego from pancreatic cancer on May 15th. She was 83 years old. She was surrounded by her twin boys, Erik and Arne, her daughter, Siri, and her husband, Tom. Linda was born in Kauai, Hawaii. Due to her beauty and popularity, she was elected princess of King Kamehameha High School in Honolulu. She was also very athletic and active in tennis in high school and college. She left the island for the mainland to go to college in Washington State where she won the Women's State Tennis Championship. It was there that she met the love of her life, Tom Birk, and gave up college to support him through medical school as a secretary. Tom always says that when he met Linda it was love at first sight. To know Linda was to love her. She was beautiful inside and out. She always had a smile on her face and flowers in her hair, because that was the Hawaiian way. She was the most incredible hula dancer and danced professionally as well as taught hula. She was very outgoing, vivacious, and had a positive attitude about everything and everybody. Tom was drafted into the Army after medical school and stayed in to see the world, and they did. They were avid travelers up to the day she died visiting Russia, China, Egypt, South America and several other countries. Linda was very involved in her husband's career as President of the Officers Wives Club and President of the Medical Wives Club for several years. She was also involved in her husband's heritage and was elected the first Hawaiian to be president of a Sons of Norway Lodge in Mesa AZ. She always said that her most rewarding accomplishment was being a mother and wife. To list her accomplishments would be too numerous and to list the many people she touched with her life in such a positive way is uncountable. She will be greatly missed by all. At her request, there will be no funeral services. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made in her name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to https://secure.pancan.org/site/Donation2?df_id=1520&1520.donation=form1 Help research find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer.
