In Celebration of the Life of Katherine Juanita "Mother" Powell 1922-2016
Mother was born Katherine Juanita Catiller on December 21, 1922, to John and Katherine Susan (Effinger) Catiller in Evansville, IN. She was called Juanita, then became known lovingly as Mother when she started her family. She then was known as Mother to most everyone – especially Kim and Pam's friends. She married William "Bud" Cornelius Huggins in 1940 and divorced in 1959. She married Grasham "Greg" Virgil Powell in July 1962, and moved to San Diego, California in 1965.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Katherine, her husband Greg, her brother John "Buddy", and her sisters Margaret and Ella.
Mother is survived by her daughters; Eloise Juanita Huggins Lunkenheimer (Bud), Jane Ann Huggins Greubel (Mick), Kimberly Sue Powell McClinton Gomez, and Pamela Louise Powell. Her grandchildren Katherine Diane Lunkenheimer Goodridge (John), Angela Marie Greubel Hammers (Danny), Christine Elizabeth Greubel Calvert, Marc Alan Greubel (Kana), Elizabeth Marie Greubel Hamer (Bill), and Zachary Alexander Gomez. She is also survived by her 17 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and her sister Mamie Cline.
Mother was manager and co-owner of Huggins Dry Cleaners for 12 years, and worked at Whirlpool Corp. as a bookkeeper, secretary, and administrative assistant for 12 years. In California she was a personal assistant to a well-known antique dealer. But, her most important and valuable job was being a dedicated, loving Mother to her four daughters.
Mother was heavily involved with the PTA for several years, and held many positions which included President. However, her most important achievement was her daughters, and multiple grandchildren she helped raise. How Blessed we are.
Mother was famous for her fried chicken, spaghetti, and carrot cake, but it was her apple pie and pecan pie that were most requested for celebrations and gatherings. She loved cooking for and feeding her family and took immense pleasure in their enjoyment of the many things she created for them. Later her joy of cooking became the simple act of baking prepackaged cookies to share with her family.
Mother loved spending time with all her family but as it grew, names started getting mixed up until eventually we were all known at one time or another as "whatever your name is." She loved spoiling her grandchildren and always got her way when it came to opposition from their parents because, as always, "Mother said."And of course the "wet washcloth" that fixes everything carried in a sandwich bag in the purse or cooler. She enjoyed the outdoors, loved camping at many different places, hunting, fishing and even the CB radio – going by the handle Skeeter." Mother loved to travel and visited Catalina Island with Kim, traveled to Hawaii with Pam and again with Kim a few years later. She made several trips to Oregon, Washington and Mexico with her husband Greg, family and friends. She also loved going to the beach, and showing guests all of the beautiful sites of San Diego.
Mother has left quite a legacy – yes, a LOT of girls but most importantly girls who strive to be like her – loving, kind, caring, sacrificing, putting others first and teaching them how to be a better person. She was the most selfless person and was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed. Although we have a lot to live up to, Mother made sure we were given the tools to succeed!
The Lord knew she had fought valiantly for many years against high blood pressure, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease with Dementia, and the need for two heart valve replacements, and she was tired. He called her home on December 2, 2016, at 8:30 PM. Her strong spirit and unwavering strength will live on through her children, grandchildren and for many generations to come, and all who knew her. Mother will be missed greatly but her family rejoices knowing she is no longer in pain and is at peace with our Father. God has a new angel.
We love you Mother! You were the Bestest Mother in the world!!
Your family and friends have been truly blessed by knowing you as a loving, caring, & giving Mother.
No one will ever be loved more than Mother; she may be gone from this world but we carry you in our hearts and ways forever!! We will not stand at your grave and weep.
