Joseph (Joe) Eugene McCafferty, 81, died Tuesday, March 2, 2016 from complications of lung cancer, at the Parkview Hospice Home in San Diego. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred (Millie) S. (Setter) McCafferty; his sister, Mary Maegerle (Delaware), his daughters, Kathleen Van Buren and Barbara Mencer, his sons, Joseph McCafferty and William McCafferty; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Although born in Philadelphia, PA on July 13, 1934, Joe lived most of his youth in Wilmington, Delaware. He met his future wife at the age of 16 and the two high school sweethearts stayed together from that day on. Shortly after graduating from the University of Delaware, they were married and heading to San Diego in order for Joe to begin his new job as a mechanical engineer in the aeronautics division of General Dynamics (Convair), where he worked for 35 years. Joe concluded his career in Fallbrook, CA working for the Department of Defense. Joe was an avid sports fan. In his younger days, he loved to fish, play golf, and was an exceptional bowler. He also coached his sons in baseball at North Clairemont Little League, Balboa Senior League, and Clairemont Pony League. While working at General Dynamics, Joe signed up for the Convair Sailing Club along with his wife. They both fell in love with sailing and excelled as competitive racers, as well as instructors. Joe was even the Commodore of the fleet for a time. In his later years, Joe focused on rooting for his Padres, Chargers and Aztecs. Along with sports, Joe had a passion for singing. He and Millie sang with the Grossmont Master Chorale for many years. Joe began singing for the St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church (Clairemont) in 1972. He was joined in the choir by his wife Millie and his daughters, Kathy and Barbara. He continued singing in church choir for the rest of his life. The last 20 years he sang with the St. Martin of Tours Church in La Mesa, CA. There will be a Rosary service held on March 17, 2016, at 6:00PM, at Legacy Funeral and Cremation Care in La Mesa. A memorial service will be held on March 18, 2016, at 11:00AM, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in La Mesa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Sharp Memorial Hospital Cancer Center.
