John "Jack" Johnstone was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from Germantown High School, and then attended Germantown Academy for a year on a swimming scholarship. He graduated from Westchester State University in 1958, where he was an All American swimmer. Jack then joined the Navy where he spent 4 years as a naval aviator, attached to the USS Ranger. A year after the death of his first wife in 1969, Jack moved to San Diego with his new wife Betty Swanson and their combined 5 children. For most of his 32 year teaching career, Jack taught math at San Diego High School, and also Mesa Community College. In the early 70's Jack took up the craze of jogging and, in 1972, joined the San Diego Track Club. In 1974, Jack and Don Shanahan combined Jack's plan for a swim/run event with Don's plan for a run/bike event and the rest is literally history. The tiny Mission Bay Triathlon, with just 46 original participants, has now grown into an Olympic sport. In 1998, they were inducted into the Triathlete Magazine Hall of Fame. While his children were young, Jack also coached soccer, softball, and Little League in La Mesa. After the children were grown and the youngest away at college, Jack and Betty moved from La Mesa to Pacific Beach where they resided for 28 years. Jack spent countless hours running at the beach, kayaking, windsurfing, and swimming in Mission Bay. Jack was a weekly volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 10 years until he began to have memory problems. He also was chairman of the Interfaith Shelter Project at Pacific Beach Methodist Church for many years. Jack was predeceased by his first wife Virginia Beadle, his parents Alice and George, his son Jeffrey, his brother Parland, and his daughter-in-law Luella Swanson. Jack leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Betty, children- Bill Swanson, Leysa Gentillon (John), Joel Johnstone (Kathy) and Kristin Baez (Jose), nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his sister, Alice Thompson of Tennessee. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday February 13th at 11am at Pacific Beach United Methodist Church, 1561 Thomas Avenue, San Diego. Jack's family would like to thank Elmcroft of Point Loma, Mission Hospice and hospice volunteer, Jerry O'Connor for their kindness and constant loving care of Jack and also Betty. In Jack's memory donations can be made to the San Diego Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Father Joe's Village or Pacific Beach United Methodist Church.
