John Leo Carr passed away in San Diego, Calif. on Thursday, December 1, 2016. He was 84 years old, born on February 22, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to Gladys Heimbaugh and Leo Carr. In 1946, John's family moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. He graduated Loyola High school in 1949 and Loyola University in 1954. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the army while attending law school and served at SHAPE headquarters in France at Versailles. When he returned to LA, he reentered Loyola Law School and graduated in 1959. After passing the bar, he worked at the Pratt and Suckling law firm in downtown Los Angeles. In 1962, he went to work in the legal department of First Charter Holding Co. It was the beginning of his successful 35 year career as a legal and corporate Savings and Loan executive. He was Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Great Western Savings Bank. In 1972 when Citizens Savings of San Francisco merged with United Savings John was appointed General Counsel and Executive VP of Citizens Bank, which later became 1st Nationwide Financial Corporation. In 1989, he retired from 1st Nationwide as Vice Chairman. In the nineties, he worked on contract for Resolution Trust Corporation in capacity of CEO of Beverly Hills Savings, Franklin Savings Association and Gibraltar Savings. He argued successfully in front of Congressional committees to change the structure of the Savings and Loan industry from intrastate to interstate. During the Savings and Loan crisis he testified as an expert witness for the government. In 1959, he married Millie Mazzarino, the love of his life for 57 years. Their three sons were born in Los Angeles. In 1973, they moved north to Orinda, Calif. where they raised their sons. In 1986 after the boys were grown, they moved to San Francisco and enjoyed city life. They retired to Pebble Beach in 1988 and were active golfing members of Monterey Peninsula Country Club. In 2004, they moved to San Diego and joined Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Golf was one of his favorite hobbies in his younger days. John was also an avid horse racing fan. He bought, bred and raced thoroughbred horses and enjoyed participating in horse racing handicap tournaments. He looked forward to playing in the same Fantasy Football league with his friends for over 25 years. He loved films, wine and travel. An incredibly generous and loving husband, father and grandfather John will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Millie Mazzarino Carr, 3 sons Anthony, Daniel, Peter (Nicole) and two grandsons Michael and David and a sister Patricia Carr Randolph (Edward). At John's request, no services will be held. For those wishing to celebrate John's life in some tangible way, the family appreciates the good works of St Jude's or the Scripps Health Foundation.
