Born Joan Rebecca Gills on December 26, 1925 in Maumee, Ohio to Dr. Willard Morgan and Ellen Katherine Gills.
At age 16 she moved to Pomona, CA for a brief period before settling with the family in Corona, CA. In 1943 she graduated from Corona Senior High School and went on to attend 2 years at the University of Arizona. Joan then transferred to Oregon State where she worked in the Health Department for about a year and graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1948.
Upon graduation she taught Kindergarten in Vista, CA until 1950. On August 5, 1950 she married Dr. Arthur Zinn and moved to La Mesa, CA where she began teaching kindergarten at Rolando Elementary, a California Distinguished School in the La Mesa – Spring Valley School District. Soon Joan retired from teaching and partnered with her husband in his dental practice as his receptionist and office manager.
Dr. and Mrs. Zinn began their family with the birth of their oldest daughter, Wendy Joanne, in February 1956. Three years later, after the birth of their son, Dwight Arthur, she and her family moved to College Heights where she continued to live for over 25 years. In April 1964, Joan gave birth to their second daughter, Stacey Ellen. While raising three children, Joan continued to work with her husband in his dental practice until his retirement on July 13, 1988.
In 2000, Dr. Zinn passed away and Joan lived between San Diego and Valencia, CA where her two daughters resided. In 2005, Joan remarried William Redelings and moved to Del Cero, CA where she lived until her passing on January 7, 2016.
Joan Zinn Redlings was a member of the San Diego Women's Dental Auxiliary, PEO and St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband Bill, sister Peggy, daughter Wendy, daughter Stacey and her husband Henry, son Dwight and his wife Jamie, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and Bill's 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, January 30th at 10 am, St Dunstan's Episcopal Church 6556 Park Ridge Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92120.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church or the Holy Spirit Anglican Church P.O. Box 601430 San Diego, CA 92160 in her name.
