Giovanna (Jean) DeSantis Combs passed away June 2, 2016 at the age of 93. Jean grew up in Manhattan, New York where she was born on November 2, 1922 to Giovanni and Carmella DeSantis who emigrated from Sicily in the early 1900's. She was predeceased by her sister Kay Lanza and her 3 brothers John, Joseph and Thomas DeSantis.
Jean married Travis Holloway Vance Jr. March 27, 1942. Travis was one of 18 killed aboard U.S.S. Hambleton on November 11, 1942 when the destroyer was torpedoed by a German U-Boat near Casablanca. Jean met Henry L Combs, US Navy, while he was stationed in New York. They married on May 22, 1944. They were transferred from New York to California in 1947.Jean has lived in the San Diego area ever since. Henry passed in 1994.
Jean was a homemaker who took great pride in her home and yard. She loved the music of the big band era and her favorite singer was Frank Sinatra whom she once saw in concert. She volunteered at Paradise Valley Hospital for 35 years working in the gift shop where her sense of humor was widely known. Jean loved dogs and carried pictures of them to show one and all. She always had at least two dogs that she treated like children and mourned the passing of each one.
Jean is survived by 2 children, Ladaire Combs Reynolds (Allen) and Perry Combs, 3 grandchildren, Kevin, Traci and Christopher, and 6 great grandchildren, two nieces, Maryann Kea, Patti Magoon, one nephew Richard Dixon and a number of grandnieces and nephews.
