James Marion Miller was born in Toledo, Ohio to Burl Forrest Miller (born December 27, 1907) and Frances Mildred Shoults (1908), both deceased, James known by biological family as "Jimmy" and espoused family and friends as "Jim" had a brother who died in childhood from fever, Jerry (born January 3, 1934), and another brother Larry (who died as a middle-aged adult in an automobile accidental/drowning), survived by his elder sister, Georgia Evelyn Miller-Thackeray (born January 11, 1928) who currently resides in Houston, Texas with loving family. Jim grew up as a young man in Ohio, as a young adult trained at the Memphis, Tenn. Naval Aviation Technical Training Center and graduated with honors as Seaman 1/c, which included many phases of electronic theory and a working knowledge of electronics equipment. He enlisted in the Navy August 15, 1950, and was the first enlistee to make 100% on the induction test since 1948. Jim served in the Korean War. He served as an anti-submarine radar operator in airplanes also known as Bombardiers") flown off Naval aircraft carriers. Dad once installed a new guidance system on a live Atlas missile on the launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base. At General Dynamics/Convair Jim was employed and became a main-frame computer programmer who programmed milling machines and also worked on nuclear cruise missiles. He also developed a program to mill the left wing of space shuttles which normally took an additional three weeks longer for a team doing the right wing. Jim loved playing Chess with his son Bryan, or anyone who would play him and once beat a Chess "Grand-Master" who played against Bobby Fisher, who later was well known to have single-handedly go on to crush the Russian chess team and their best player. Jim married Marcine Mary Yourczek 61 years ago whom he met in San Diego and married her on, as he called it "All Hallows Eve"…scary…, settled down in this beautiful naval city to raise a family of five children, Bruce Randall, Linda Dawne Miller-Doan, Bryan Douglas, Deron Raymond Miller, and Janine Maurie Miller-Smith. Jim is grandfather to eight grandchildren, Carolyn Marie Doan, Gaelen and Crescent Miller, Michael and Cindy Parr-Miller, and Dillan Bartlet, Garrett Rogers, and Emma Adelaide Smith. And four (plus) great-grandchildren, Ryan, Amiee May, Kallie Marie and Valarie Kay Parr-Miller-Smith. (I don't know the names of Michael's children…) Jim was known by many to be a loving and hardworking individual, a quote from his Nephew David Miller, and second Niece Jennifer Listak sum up his character and relationships with others: "The other day I lost a friend and family member, My Uncle Jimmy passed away. He was a special and kind person, did so much for a lot of folks. He was a Navy Veteran and beloved father and husband. My Dad's older brother will always be remembered as being a guy who you wanted to get advice from…good advice. I talked to him every week in San Diego over the phone growing up in Houston. We still talked regular like over the years, (since I moved away from Houston.) I'm going to miss those calls. Will always love and miss you Uncle Jimmy." David Miller. "I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for you and your family's loss! I heard so many stories through my life from Grandma (Georgia Evelyn Thackeray) about her little brother, Jimmy. I had met him a couple times, but the most memorable was his last visit a few years ago at Uncle Tim's (Houston, Texas). I got to see him and Grandma play some games together and also joined in on one. He had a very sweet spirit and quite the personality…lol. He reminds me so much of Grandma. It was so precious to me watching just a brother and sister laughing together and playing games!" Jen Listak Jim was known to love watching and participating in sports, from softball, basketball, and bowling. He was an avid supporter of the San Diego Aztec College games and the San Diego Chargers. For many years he was a bowler and Secretary/Treasurer of a large bowling league. As a father, he loved to take his family camping up in the Cuyamaca mountains, or to local beaches in San Diego. He passed on his knowledge of electronics, mechanical knowledge and building skills to his three sons, like a father to apprentices. His hard work and hard play ethics to achieve and excel at whatever you do was engrained in each of his beloved children.
