Mr. James Abner Clark, 88, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at his home in San Diego, CA.
Born on May 31, 1928 to Thaddeus Clark and Beatrice Jenkins Gray, James spent his childhood and completed his formal education in Greenville, NC.
Known as "Jimmie" to his family, James enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and served in World War II, The Korean War, and in Vietnam. During his time in the Navy, he earned the following medals:
WWII Victory Medal
China Service Medal
Korean Service Medal (with two stars)
United Nations Service Medal
Good Conduct Award for Service (received 7 times)
National Defense Service Medal (twice)
Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star
American Theatre Medal
While stationed in Thailand, he met his wife of 50 years, Bhusadee Clark. They married on April 19, 1967, and moved back to the United States prior to the birth of their two children, Judy and James.
James and his family moved to San Diego in 1971, and he retired from the Navy in 1975 after serving for 30 years. He then worked for 18 years in Civil Service working at various commissaries throughout San Diego County.
James stayed very active in his retirement, and was always involved in his children's and grandchildren's extracurricular activities. Even after his children and grandchildren aged-out of Valencia Park Pop Warner, he regularly attended the games in order to support the league. He also enjoyed talking with the homeless veterans during his walks on the embarcadero, and would frequently buy them coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Additionally, he would regularly donate toys and money to homeless children. He was a San Diego Padre's fan, and enjoyed spending time at the casino.
James was preceded in death by both of his parents, his brother Reginald Gray, his sister Merle Moten, and two of his sons, Reginald Clark and Phillip Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Bhusadee Clark of San Diego, CA; children Rowena Clark Tatmon of Oakland, CA, Judy Clark of El Sobrante, CA, and James T. Clark of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Joh'Ronnie Cotton, Demeisha Upshaw, William Stewart, and James T. Clark, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Artaysha Cotton, , Kiya Washington, Nia Cotton , Daya Williams, and Joh'Ronnie Cotton, Jr., and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
A burial service will be held on Tuesday May 23rd at 8:30am at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.
