Jim was born in Long Beach, CA on February 22, 1939. His dad, James (Jack) Wood Barnes was in the Navy and his mother, Dorothy Ruby Barnes, was busy at home taking care of Jim and his younger brother Ronnie who was born 4 years after Jim. After moving every 2 years for the Navy, the Barnes family finally settled down to live in San Diego. Jim attended St. Augustine High School and graduated in 1957 and then went to San Diego City College for a short time. He then went into the Army for a few years. The family moved into their house on Marlboro Avenue in 1962 where his parents lived until they passed away. Jim and Judy met while both of them were working at Sears, she, in the Yardage Department and he, in the Automotive Department. They married on January 17, 1965 and had their first daughter Shelley in December of the following year. Their second daughter Kim was born 3 years later in August. They went into business with Judy's sister, Nancy, and her husband Bob purchasing the Cohen Deli in Parkway Plaza which they successfully ran for 9 years. When they decided to sell the business in 1979 to go out on their own, Jim decided to buy George's Lawn Equipment in Pacific Beach on Garnet Avenue. He knew nothing about this type of business but knew he could make it successful. Of course, this did not keep him busy enough so he also became a sales representative for California Lawnmower Products. This way he got to travel all over the County visiting the other Lawnmower Shops. In 1985, he purchased another store in El Cajon and renamed it George's Lawn Equipment. This was a great time to be in this business, no drought, and profits were good. Jim started taking his employees on trips that he and Judy sponsored to Las Vegas and many different locations in Baja California and Mexico. The employees went to so many places they may not have gone otherwise. There were also many ski trips up to the Conway's cabin in Big Bear. Usually it was Jim and another 5 to 10 "kids". He always welcomed Shelley and Kim's friends and a lot of fun memories were made at that cabin. When Jim became a grandpa his life became a lot fuller. He doted on his 2 granddaughters, Brianna and Brooke, and his grandson, Bryce. He and Judy were a big part of all of their lives and enjoyed watching them grow. Jim loved travelling and taking cruises so much that he had scheduled another cruise before he went in for his surgery because he wasn't supposed to leave us this early. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and he, like a lot of other people, thought he would live to 100 like his dad. Sadly it was not to be. Jim will be greatly missed by his loving wife of almost 52 years Judy, his daughters Shelley and Kim, his granddaughters Brianna and Brooke, and his grandson Bryce. His brother Ronnie along with his wife will also miss him, their friendship and business ventures. And of course all of the other people who were related to him, knew him, loved him, were helped by him, or just acquainted with him. He was a man that will be missed by many! A memorial service will be Saturday January 14th at 1pm at Holy Trinity Church in El Cajon.
