Harold entered this life on June 6, 1943 in Seattle, Washington and entered into rest on October, 4, 2016 at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California at the age of 73 years.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Ruth H. Herlan, his mother Barbara Herlan, daughter Ivette Heutmaker and son-in-law Brad Heutmaker, 2 grandchildren LaRue and Clarissa Heutmaker of Rochester New York his son Peter Roland Herlan of San Diego, daughter Kim Lyon and extended family and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his father Peter John Herlan.
Harold resided the past 40 plus years of his life years in San Diego, California area. He attended and received his high school degree from Carson City High School in Nevada, then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from San Diego State University. He was proud of his career most notably as an Educator, however, prior jobs included working as an Orthopedic Orderly, Pre-Med, and Electrician. Harold proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps retiring as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service.
Harold had a passion for coaching an array of sports activities and was proud of being his coaching that included over 100 wins. His life events included receiving the Navy Achievement medal, awarded the 2009 Educator of the Year from the University of Santa Barbara, and accomplishing hiking a third of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mexican Border to Canada.
Visitation hours will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 from 6 to 8 PM at Legacy Funeral Chapel, 7043 University Ave., La Mesa, California.
Harold's Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Skyline church, 11330 Campo Road, La Mesa, California 91941.
Harold will be privately laid to rest on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
