Family was most important in his life.
Gerald Spath was born in Alice, North Dakota on April 14, 1921 to Albert and Clara Spath. His childhood was full of sadness and adventure. When his mother died during childbirth when he was about 5, he returned to live with his grandmother and his siblings, Ervin, Ben and Florence. They had many adventures in their small town. At 18, he traveled to San Diego with his step-mother Lottie to join the Navy. Lottie later introduced him to Helen Willard, who he remained happily married to for 69 years. They raised 3 children, Gary, Jeff and Leslie. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather to Kelly and Erin and great grandfather to Kamden and Kyler.
He and Helen loved to read, play pinochle with friends, and travel throughout the United States with their trailer, visiting relatives (especially their beloved granddaughters) and historic landmarks.
His 21 years in the Navy influenced him until the end, even though many of his memories were lost to dementia, his time in the service was still a very strong memory.
Helen preceded him in death by 3 months. They enjoyed a wonderful life together and relished their time with their grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter Erin. He is survived by his sons, Gary and Jeffery, daughter in law Synda, daughter Leslie, beloved granddaughter Kelly (Isaac) and great grandsons Kamden and Kyler.
He was a wonderful father! Rest in Peace Dad!
