Gerald "Bert" Lloyd Rimmer passed away peacefully at the age of 84 in San Diego on Sunday Oct. 23, 2016. Bert was born Dec. 4, 1931 in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada as the middle child of three, to Rev. T. Lloyd Rimmer and Rubie V. Appleyard. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family, briefly living in the Pacific Northwest before the family settled in San Diego. His father accepted a ministerial post at a local Episcopal church and the family put down roots. Bert attended La Jolla High School in the early 50's and excelled at Track and Field as well as serving as a manager of the football team. Bert's long jump record stood for many years. While at La Jolla High he met the love of his life Elaine Jewell, and they were married in 1952. He briefly attended S.D.S.U. before enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bert valiantly fought on the front line as a sergeant in the U.S. regular Army, Heavy Mortar Company, 123rd infantry regiment, 7th Army Division. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, U.N. Service Medal and Army Occupation Medal (Germany). After an honorable discharge in 1954, Bert returned to San Diego to begin a family with his loving wife Elaine. In 1956, Bert was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. Bert and Elaine raised three children, participating actively in the children's many activities. Ice skating, soccer, Indian Guides and academic pursuits were just a few of the interests in which they were involved. Bert patiently paced the soccer sidelines, coaching his two son's many soccer teams and guiding them to numerous championships. When his sons were not on the field, Bert could be found playing a "pick up" game with the other coaches and parents that could keep up with him. Bert worked for forty plus years for the same pharmaceutical company, eventually becoming part owner as the business grew to 12 locations throughout Southern California. During his lifetime Bert enjoyed several hobbies. Most notable was his love of raising cymbidium orchids. He won numerous local and national awards including an award of distinction from the Cymbidium Society of America, as well as creating some new cross-breeds he was afforded naming rights to. He also enjoyed playing in the occasional golf match. Upon retirement Bert spent his time with his wife and many grandchildren. He was also fond of playing cards, watching golf and participating in activities with his neighbors. Mr. Rimmer is preceded in death by his wife Elaine in 2006, his son-in-law David Payton in 1999 and his sister Patricia Peterson. He is survived by his sister Shirley Reynolds, daughter Dorinda Payton, sons Bret and Scott, and grandchildren Danielle and David Payton, and Bailey, Liberty, Zoe and Samson Rimmer. His family and friends are saddened but proud of his life and he will be remembered fondly. There are no public services planned. Place of Interment will be All Saints Episcopal Church in Vista, CA. The family suggests donations be made to those entities involved in cancer research.
