George Thomas Flanagan was born on September 29, 1936 in Hartford, CT. He died in National City, CA, on June 6, 2017, the 58th wedding anniversary of he and his wife, Barbara Louise Cowles Flanagan.
Together they had four children: Virginia Louise Flanagan Landry, Thomas Patrick Flanagan (wife Michelle Tyler Flanagan), Kerry Barbara Flanagan (partner Keith Delong), and Erin Kathleen Flanagan. George is also survived by grandchildren and his sister, Margaret R. Lempitsky.
George attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and Weaver High School in Hartford, CT, and later, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. He graduated from Kings Point in 1958 and entered the U.S. Navy as an Ensign.
He served 21 years of active duty in the Navy and was selected to the rank of Captain prior to retiring in 1979. He was a Vietnam War Veteran and was awarded a Bronze Star.
As a civilian, he worked as a maritime industry executive, first as General Manager of McAllister Towing and Transportation Co. in Norfolk, VA., where he was also President of the Hampton Roads Maritime Association and Alumni of the Year for Kings Point. Later, he worked as Operations Manager for E.N. Bisso & Son in New Orleans, LA. He also served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville, LA.
Services will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017, beginning with a memorial mass and celebration of life at 10:00 A.M. at Paradise Village, 2700 East 4th Street, National City, CA, 91950 and followed by burial services at 1:00 P.M. at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA, 92122.
