Donald Ewart Holcomb Jr., son of Donald Ewart Holcomb and Louise Pfister Holcomb, was born October 28, 1925 in Berkeley, California. He passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2017. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater from 1943-1945. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1950 in Engineering. He later received master's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Industrial Arts. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Epsilon Pi Tau professional fraternities. While at UC Berkeley Don met Elizabeth Moredock and they married on January 28, 1950. Shortly thereafter they relocated to San Diego. Don worked as an engineer for the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory, Ryan Aeronautical, and General Dynamics. He was also employed by San Diego State University as a Lecturer. While employed at Ryan Aeronautical he participated in the development of the digital Doppler radar system installed aboard the Apollo Lunar Module. During his working life his creativity led to the development of two patents. Don retired from General Dynamics in 1992. Don had many interests and they included woodworking, photography and magic. He was a member of the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, Friends of Photography, and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He treasured time spent in classes with Ansel Adams. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed attending workshops in areas of his interest and passion. As a retired engineer he never lost his curiosity about "how things worked". He had a keen sense of humor and was loved by his family and friends. He was a great dad. He was an active participant with his wife Elizabeth at the First United Methodist Church of San Diego. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughters Barbara Jacobson (Gary), Judy Whitehead, and son Bill Holcomb. He also is survived by granddaughters Briana Whitehead and Cristina Jacobson. The family requests that donations in his memory be made to Salvation Army, First United Methodist Church of San Diego Children and Student Ministries program, or the charity of choice.
