Arthur (Art) Coombes passed away on December 25, 2016, at his home in Paradise Village located in National City, California. He was born in Joplin, Missouri on August 21, 1934 to Doyle Coombes and Edith Call. Ten years ago he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma cancer, and fought a long battle with the disease.
During his childhood he lived in Missouri and Texas before joining the US Navy where he spent 20 years traveling to different parts of the world, and served on the commissioning crews of three ships including the USS Enterprise CVN65 as well as being attached to various other duty stations including the Territory of Guam. He retired as ETCS, returned to college, and earned a BS Degree. He then went to on program complex computer systems in the Defense industry. He was a true pioneer in computer programming. He began his computer training with the US Navy in 1960 at the Great Lakes Training Center when computers and their programming was in its infancy. He learned to program when it was done in 1's and 0's. He was always proud of his Navy career in computer programming. He worked hard at whatever he did including providing for his family.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Marian Coombes, his daughter, Darlene Coombes, his son and wife, Stephen and Rhonda Coombes, his granddaughter and husband, Meghann and Keith Herter, his grandson and wife, Christopher and Allison Coombes, and grandson, Brandon Coombes, and his great grandchildren, Sydney, Victoria, and Nolan Herter.
Graveside services to be conducted on 1-23-17 at 12:30 PM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, California 92122.
