Alice was born in Macau, China on February 13th, 1923, and passed away peacefully in La Jolla, CA on March 18th, 2017.
She was the 5th of 11 children. After high school she left Macau and travelled to Chongqing, China, to attend college. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) she survived the devastation of the war when she had to flee from Nanjing to Chongqing. After WWII Alice settled in Hong Kong where she worked as a teacher and librarian at Lingnan Middle School where she made many life-long friends. She loved literature and Chinese calligraphy and even at advanced age she spent hours to practice calligraphy.
In 1956, Alice married Siu-Chang in Switzerland. One year later Alice gave birth to her older son Karl (Tscha-Ning) and 6 years later to her second son Felix (Tscha-Schjen). She was a devoted mother who spent all her time at home to take care of her children and made sure that her sons were raised properly. In the early years of their marriage they had to live very frugally. In order to make ends meet Alice leased a small piece of land near their home where she grew her own vegetables and fruits. She also baked her own bread and learned how to sew clothes to save money. She sacrificed a lot during her life in order to allow her sons to grow up into a "better" life.
After the death of her husband, Alice spent a lot of time travelling around the world visiting her relatives and friends, spending more and more time in the U.S. where many of her relatives live. She became a permanent citizen and enjoyed spending time with her siblings in Los Angeles.
At the age of 93 years and after sustaining a pelvic fracture she finally agreed to move to "Sea Breeze Senior Living" in La Jolla to be closer to her son's family. Being very skeptical at the beginning about moving to a new environment and reluctant to lose her independence she slowly started to enjoy her new life there. It turned out that Alice finally found her well-deserved "Wonderland" where she received loving care which she was used to give to others. Her strong will to "survive" blessed her with 94 years of a fulfilled and happy life.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Karl (Sylvia) Sun, Felix (Scilla) Sun and her 5 grandchildren: Kevin, Stella, Tiffany, Kurtis and Katia.
Alice: "How long is forever?" White Rabbit: "Sometimes, just one second."
